Free Phonics Sound Charts for Kindergarten, 1st Grade, and 2nd Grade

Looking for some free phonics sound charts? We have an alphabet chart and a vowel sounds chart for you!

You can use a phonics sound chart in so many ways! Here are some suggestions:

- Have students "read" an alphabet chart. They say the letter name, the name of the picture, and the sound, like this: a, apple /a/, b, book, /b/, etc. For variety, have them do it backwards or just say the letter sounds. (If you're doing this for the first time, just start with two rows and work your way up.)

- Give students the vowel chart to reference as they're reading. When they come to a word that's tricky, they can look for the vowel spelling pattern on their vowel sounds chart. Make sure to go over the names of each picture (a list of all the picture names is included in the free downloads). If students haven't learned all of the sounds yet, that's okay - they may still be able to use part of the chart.

- Give students the charts to use as they're writing. Kindergarten and early first grade, students can use the alphabet chart to stretch out words and listen for their sounds. In later first grade and up, students can use the vowel chart to determine how to spell the vowel sounds in a word.
